What to expect
You’ll meet us
When you first arrive, we’ll give you a tour of our lab and introduce you to our researchers.
We’ll do a little paperwork
Once everyone is comfortable, we’ll ask you to read and sign a consent form, which describes what your child will do in the study, the risks and benefits of participating, and your child’s rights as a research participant.
Your child will play a computer game
With your permission, we’ll ask your child if they’d like to participate in the study. Most of our research studies involve learning a language or pattern by playing a short computer or tablet game. At the end of the game, we’ll find out what your child has learned by asking them to respond to some questions or try to speak in the language.
And get some stickers
Our studies are fun for most children, but we take frequent sticker breaks to check-in with them and make sure they are still enjoying participating.
We provide compensation for your time and travel in a few different ways:
- Penn students receive course credit for participating in our research via the SONA system.
- Children and their families Children are invited to select a children’s book as a token of our thanks.
Directions to our lab
Our lab is located on Penn’s campus, near the corner of 34th and Walnut. We are on the side of the street with the Starbucks and the CVS. Our address is 3401-C Walnut Street.
You can take any SEPTA Regional Rail train to 30th Street Station. From there, our lab is a 15-minute walk or a 5-minute ride on the LUCY bus.
You can get on the LUCY bus at 30th Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard. Make sure you get on the Gold Loop bus and get off at 34th and Walnut. Our lab is just across the street.
You can also take the Market-Frankfort Line to the 34th Street station and walk two blocks south to Walnut Street.
If you are driving to our lab, we recommend parking in the Hill Lot - a small parking lot on Walnut between 33rd and 34th streets. You can walk one block west to our building at 3401-C Walnut, or just call us when you’ve parked and we’ll come out to get you.
Walnut and 34th are both one-way streets, so it works best if you use the Hill Lot’s address (3333 Walnut Street) as your destination for directions/GPS.
There is also street parking all around our lab on Walnut, Chestnut, and 34th if you prefer doing that. Street parking is $2.00/hr.
When you arrive
There are two doors to our building on Walnut Street: one has an A on it and one has a C on it. Our lab is through the C door. Someone from our team will be waiting for you at the C door to take you up to our lab on the fourth floor.
You need a key to access our lab and parts of the fourth floor, so it’s best to wait for us before heading up the elevator. If you have any trouble finding us, you can call, email, or text us for help.
